Amazonian Traditional Medicine: Ancient Wisdom for Healing and Awareness

Traditional Amazonian medicine is much more than a set of healing practices: it’s a path to knowledge, a sacred link between the human being, nature and the spiritual world. It’s also the only traditional medicine in the world that can be learned directly from medicinal plants, through initiatory processes called diets.
For generations, native Amazonian peoples – such as the Shipibo-Conibo of Peru – have cultivated a deep understanding of medicinal plants, healing songs (icaros) and rituals that restore balance between body, mind and soul.

A holistic approach to healing

At the heart of traditional Amazonian medicine, healing is not limited to the treatment of physical symptoms. It aims to restore inner harmony, acting on the emotional, energetic and spiritual levels.
Shipibo shamans, known as Onanya, work with master plants(rao), which they enclose from teaching spirits. Through their guidance, they identify energetic imbalances and accompany participants towards lasting inner transformation.

Master plants, allies of consciousness

Among the many medicinal plants found in the Amazon, some are renowned for their powerful spiritual and healing properties.
Ayahuasca, often referred to as the spirit vine, is undoubtedly the best known. Used in ritual settings, it opens consciousness, helps release emotional blockages and reconnects us with the sacred dimension of life.
But other plants such as bobinsana, pinon blanco or colorado, orajo sacha also play an essential role in traditional diets – periods of introspection and purification when we learn directly from the plants, in silence and in communion with nature.

An encounter between ancestral traditions and the modern quest for meaning

More and more people from Europe and North America are turning to traditional Amazonian medicine to find inner balance and a more natural approach to healing.
At the Inin Jema center, located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, we offer traditional medicine retreats guided by Shipibo master healers.
Our retreats offer a safe and respectful space to explore the teachings of plants, heal inner wounds and reconnect with the wisdom of the living.
